mask workshop

Timișoara, Romania (2023)
with youths from the theatre groups ‚Meine Leute‘ from Eppingen, Germany and ‚NiL-Theater‘ from Timișoara, Romania in cooperation with KUBIK e.V. and IDRH gGmbH

a workshop as part of the project „In the Flow of Time: Danube Stories Retold from a Young Perspective“

In the theater, we assume various roles, with costumes and masks allowing us to feel even more deeply into the character we’re portraying. A bulbous nose with warts, thick eyebrows, or a forehead with deep furrows – in the mask workshop, we give ourselves a new face. Taking half-masks in plaster from each other, shaping them in a three-dimensional and colorful way, the youth actively participated in every step, from preparing the plaster bandages to cooking the glue, to the final brushstroke.

Beyond acting, numerous crafts play a role in a theater production. Whether it’s the sculptor creating stage objects, the painter designing monumental backdrops, or the lighting technician ensuring we’re not left in the dark, they all contribute to a performance.

In the mask workshop, we explored an artistically practical aspect of theater. The youth could express their ideas both in terms of craftsmanship and creativity. They experienced sensory moments of creative creation, both when removing a mask from someone else and when having one taken off them. In doing so, they shaped unique pieces that are not just masks but reflections of themselves.

Subsequently, a photo shoot took place at extraordinary locations, showcasing the fluorescent masks in various scenes.
